The gutter system on a house is designed to draw water away from the home after it rains or snows. As water rolls off the roof, gutters catch the water and direct it toward a downspout in a safe drainage area. By keeping water away from the house, gutters help prevent flooding, mold growth, foundation damage, soil erosion and more. As the potential for damage is high, homeowners should perform regular maintenance on their gutters to ensure they are in good condition.

How to Clean

Experts recommend doing a thorough gutter cleaning at least once a year in the fall (more often if your house is surrounded by trees). To clean the gutters, you’ll need a ladder, bucket, hand shovel and gloves. Work your way around the house and scoop out any debris that has accumulated in the gutters to allow for an uninterrupted flow of water. If you prefer not to get up on the ladder to regularly clean your gutters, make the investment in a gutter guard that acts as a screen to keep leaves and debris. Regular gutter cleaning can not only keep your house safe from water damage, but it can also prolong the life of your gutters.

When to Replace

According to the National Association of Home Builders, gutters should last approximately 20 years with proper maintenance. If you notice sagging, cracking or visible damage, it may be time to replace your gutters. For further confirmation, take a look at your gutters while it’s raining, as you’ll be able to pinpoint areas where they may be leaking.

Replacement Options

There are several material options when it comes to replacing gutters. Aluminum gutters are the most popular, as they are corrosion-resistant, lightweight and available in a variety of colors. Copper gutters are typically used for historic or high-end homes and vinyl gutters are a cost-effective option for most homeowners. When choosing gutters, it’s smart to schedule an appointment with a home improvement professional to discuss the best fit not only for the safety of your home but also leaf relief systems that add curb appeal to your home and keep you safely off the ladder!

Big data breaches are a reality these days, but don’t be fooled into thinking hackers are only after large companies. Keeping your computer secure is necessary to protect your personal and financial information, documents, photos and more. By taking simple steps to enhance your computer’s security you can help to ensure that your personal information will stay private.

Install anti-virus software and check your firewall. Anti-virus software is a set of programs designed to prevent malicious spyware, worms, adware and other viruses from affecting your computer. The software actively runs to detect and remove these viruses before they become a problem. Once you purchase an anti-virus software plan, it’s important to note its expiration date and renew it each year. Additionally, you should check your computer’s firewall (accessed through your computer’s setting) to ensure that it is turned on, particularly for public networks.

Update your operating system promptly. While taking the time to update your computer’s operating system can seem like a pain, don’t put it off. When operating system updates become available, they often contain fixes for bugs that may make your computer susceptible to threats.

Back-up your data periodically. Take a moment to think about the data you have stored on your computer—contracts, documents, photos, etc.—and how you would feel if that information was lost. To avoid that feeling, make it a habit to back-up your data on a regular basis, for example monthly or quarterly. You can opt for a cloud-based file sharing program, such as Dropbox or Google Drive, or purchase an external hard drive to store your files.

Always scan external devices. Viruses can enter your computer from other devices that you connect to it, like USB drives, smartphones or external hard drives. Many computers automatically scan these devices before opening. Make sure that this step is complete before clicking through to access the device.

Be choosy with your passwords. Using the same password for multiple websites and programs might be easy for you to remember, but it also makes it easy for hackers to gain access to your accounts. Make sure there is variety among your passwords and update them monthly to keep your information safe !

You know a nicely landscaped yard when you see one. But what is it that sets one yard apart from others when it comes to landscape design? There are several key principles that, when followed, can help create a beautifully designed outdoor space. Whether you are giving it a go by yourself or calling in the professionals to get the job done, keep these principles in mind when you embark on your next landscaping project.

When choosing plants and flowers for your landscaping, think in terms of an overall color scheme. The colors you choose should complement each other and include a mix of primary and secondary colors. Remember that plants flower at different times, so try to incorporate a variety of plants that will provide continuous color throughout the spring and summer.

Focal Points

Adding a focal point into your landscaping is a great way to draw attention to a particular area of your garden. Unique plants, water features, benches or other objects can serve as focal points. While you can have more than one focal point in your yard, be sure to space them out so that the eye isn’t overwhelmed.

An eye-pleasing landscape design should also include a variety of textures. Bold, sturdy plants can be balanced with fine, delicate flowers and coarse bark on a tree can be softened with wispy grasses. The texture of hardscapes and focal points, for example rough-cut stones, smooth ceramic pots or wooden pergolas, also plays into the overarching look of landscaping and should be noted in your design.

Throughout your yard, it’s important to make sure each component of your landscaping is scaled appropriately. A large house, for instance, should have substantial plants and shrubbery, while a townhouse may only need a small flowerbed. When purchasing plants, keep in mind their full-grown size, as many will continue to grow and may set your proportions off balance.

It’s time to think big picture. Your garden, walkways, patio or deck and other features should all work together. This can be achieved by repeating and grouping certain colors or textures or by utilizing a certain stone type throughout your yard. The overall effect: a beautiful landscape design.

  • ½ cup finely chopped pecans
  • ½ cup dry breadcrumbs
  • 8 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves
  • ¼ cup clarified butter, melted
  • ¼ cup Dijon mustard
  • ¼ cup dark brown sugar
  • 2 ⅔ tablespoons bourbon whiskey
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ¾ cup unsalted butter, chilled and cut into small cubes
  • ½ cup sliced green onions

Step 1 - Stir together the pecans, breadcrumbs, and 2 tablespoons of clarified butter. Spread the mixture out on a plate. Press the chicken breasts into the mixture to coat on both sides. Heat the remaining 2 tablespoons of clarified butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Place the coated chicken breasts in the pan, and fry on both sides until nicely browned and chicken meat is cooked through, about 10 minutes per side.

Step 2 - In a small saucepan, whisk together the Dijon mustard, brown sugar, bourbon, soy sauce, and Worcestershire sauce until smooth. Bring to a simmer over medium-low heat, then remove from the burner, and whisk in the 3/4 cup of unsalted butter one piece at a time. Do not return to the heat.

Step 3 - Arrange the chicken breasts on a large serving plate. Pour the sauce over the chicken, and sprinkle with green onion.
